By 1857 the Academy had become the Peekskill Military Academy. After a long and illustrious history PMA closed its doors in 1968, citing a decline in enrollment and lack of endowment.

The academy was built by a hanging tree where a British spy was executed in 1777; his bones were discovered and relocated during construction of a dormitory in the 1860s.
