Although Luxury You Can Afford was a modest album by Cocker's uneven standards, with a blend of covers which were both capable and questionable, it did mark the first steps towards recovery for a man who could very well have disappeared into a haze of drugs, drink and died a sad death like so many rock stars of his generation.
