  1. The group was founded in 1961 by Bertha Barbee-McNeal (June 12, 1940 – December 15, 2022) and Mildred Gill Arbor, students at Western Michigan University. Mildred recruited her younger sister Carolyn (also known as Cal or Caldin), who was in 9th grade, and Cal's friend Betty Kelley, a junior in high school.

  4. 25. Juni 2014 · Singer and performer Mildred Arbor was born in Mississippi to Dora and Reverend Willie Gill, Sr. In the early 1940s, when Arbor was still a child, her family moved from Mississippi to Kalamazoo, Michigan.

In 1957, they recorded for the Stepp imprint, under the group name of the Barbee's, releasing 'The Wind' b/w 'Que Pasa? (What's Happening?)'. the velvelettes in 1962. The women were students at the Western Michigan University in Detroit.

  7. 27. Okt. 2016 · The original group was founded by Bertha Barbee (McNeal) of Flint and Mildred Gill (Arbor) of Kalamazoo. The two young women were college students at Western Michigan University. Barbee asked her cousin, Norma Barbee (Fairhurst), who was at the time a 17-year-old student at Southwestern High School in Flint, to join the group.
