Merl Saunders started his professional music career playing in show bands and jazz groups. He started to collaborate with Jerry Garcia in 1971 and their groups, the Garcia / Saunders Band and Legion Of Mary, were Garcia main away from the Grateful Dead vehicle from 1972 to 1975.
