Court and Spark is the sixth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. Released in January 1974, it infuses the folk rock style of her previous albums with jazz elements. It was an immediate commercial and critical success—and remains her most successful album.

Aug. 2014 · This outright rock tune was emblematic of Mitchell’s new musical direction and features The Band’s Robbie Robertson on lead guitar. “Trouble Child” is another pleasant soft rock track with the slightest tinge of an edge, as it musically has just the slightest elements of jazz, led by the trumpet of Chuck Findley .

9. März 2024 · One of the highest points in this eight-album streak comes in Court and Spark, her sixth studio album released 50 years ago on Jan. 17, 1974. The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200, a peak only matched by her live album Miles of Aisles released the same year.

Jan. 2024 · Court and Spark is home to two of Mitchell’s biggest radio hits, “Help Me” and “Free Man In Paris.” The textures of these songs, the first with saxophone, the second with bass played by Wilton Felder, co-founder of L.A. jazz group The Crusaders, are what make them memorable and endlessly playable.
