The university was founded on 20 January 1661, when King John II Casimir in Polish Jan II Kazimierz Waza of Poland granted a charter to the city's Jesuit Collegium, founded in 1608, giving it "the honor of an academy and the title of a university". In 1589, the Jesuits had tried to found a university earlier, but did not succeed.
From its founding until 1773, Lviv University was completely under the control of the Jesuit Order and it was subordinated to the Jesuit General in Rome. The University was headed by the rector. The main building of the academy was near the Cracow street in the city centre.

12. Aug. 2023 · Faculty of Law is one of the oldest Ukrainian law schools. The beginning of Lviv University dates back to 20 January 1661. That’s when the Polish King Jan Kazimierz signed a diploma, which gave “dignity academy and university title” to Lviv Jesuit College.
The Lviv National Ivan Franko University (or the University of Lviv) is one of the oldest universities in Ukraine. It was founded on 20 January 1661, when king Jan III Sobieski conferred the title of university on the Jesuit college. Jesuits ran the University till 1773 when the order was suspended.
