The university was founded on 20 January 1661, when King John II Casimir in Polish Jan II Kazimierz Waza of Poland granted a charter to the city's Jesuit Collegium, founded in 1608, giving it "the honor of an academy and the title of a university". In 1589, the Jesuits had tried to found a university earlier, but did not succeed.
