Their marriage lasted until 1931. Lil Hardin Armstrong, at the time more ambitious than her husband, was mainly responsible for Louis’ taking the chance to work with the most popular orchestra of the time, Fletcher Henderson’s. During his stay she was leading her own small group in Chicago, which Louis joined late in 1925.
Lillian Hardin Armstrong (née Hardin; February 3, 1898 – August 27, 1971) was an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, singer, and bandleader. She was the second wife of Louis Armstrong, with whom she collaborated on many recordings in the 1920s.
