William DeWolf Hopper (March 30, 1858 – September 23, 1935) was an American actor, singer, comedian, and theatrical producer. A star of vaudeville and musical theater, he became best known for performing the popular baseball poem "Casey at the Bat".

Featuring a dramatic narrative about a baseball game, the poem was later popularized by DeWolf Hopper in many vaudeville performances. It has become one of the best-known poems in American literature.
Serendipitously, Gunter happened to be friends with famed stage actor De Wolf Hopper, who, in August of 1888, was appearing at the McCaull Opera Company in New York City in the comic opera “Prince Methusalem.”
