Isabel Morgan was a microbiologist who studied immunity to polio viruses and inoculated monkeys with an experimental vaccine in 1948. She contributed to the development of the polio vaccine introduced by Jonas Salk in 1953, but her achievements have been overshadowed by his fame.
Dr. Isabel Morgan was a brilliant researcher who developed a killed-virus vaccine for polio in monkeys in 1949. She quit the field after five years and never tested her vaccine on humans, missing the chance to compete with Salk and Sabin.
4. Jan. 2021 · In 1944, Johns Hopkins tasked Isabel and an elite group of virologists with researching immunization. With the help of March of Dimes funding, Isabel tested her own theory about polio immunity: unlike other researchers, she believed she could work with a killed-virus vaccine rather than a live virus vaccine.
The daughter of two accomplished biologists (her father won a Nobel Prize in 1933), Dr. Isabel Morgan was an early and important player in the race to find a polio vaccine. “Isabel Morgan is really one of the unsung heroes of the polio fight,” says author David Oshinsky. “She was a brilliant researcher.”
