The 1976 Summer Olympics (French: Jeux olympiques d'été de 1976), officially known as the Games of the XXI Olympiad (French: Jeux de la XXIe Olympiade) and commonly known as Montreal 1976 (French: Montréal 1976), were an international multi-sport event held from July 17 to August 1, 1976, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Die Spiele 1976 in Montreal wurden durch einen afrikanischen Boykott überschattet, an dem sich 22 Länder beteiligten. Der Boykott wurde von Tansania organisiert, um gegen die Tatsache zu demonstrieren, dass die neuseeländische Rugby-Mannschaft durch das Apartheid-Südafrika gereist war, und dass Neuseeland bei den Olympischen Spielen antreten sollte...
Die Frauenwettbewerbe im Basketball, Rudern und Mannschaftshandball feierten ihr olympisches Debüt. Hockey wurde zum ersten Mal auf einem Kunstrasenspielfeld gespielt.
Alberto Juantorena aus Kuba errang den ersten Doppelsieg über 400m und 800m. Die japanische Frauen-Volleyballmannschaft erwies sich als unaufhaltsam und gewann alle ihre Spiele in drei Sätzen, und Miklos Németh aus Ungarn gewann im Speerwurf und wurde damit der erste Sohn eines Leichtathletik-Goldmedaillengewinners, der selbst Gold gewann.
Die vierzehnjährige Turnerin Nadia Comaneci aus Rumänien war der unbestrittene Star der Spiele. Berühmtheit erlangte sie, als sie für ihre Leistung am Stufenbarren die erste perfekte Bewertung von 10,0 erhielt. Insgesamt gelang ihr das noch sieben weitere Male.
Die Olympischen Sommerspiele 1976 (offiziell Spiele der XXI. Olympiade genannt) fanden vom 17. Juli bis zum 1. August 1976 in der kanadischen Stadt Montreal statt.
