22. Jan. 2021 · The school district in Brookline, Massachusetts, decided to change the name of the Edward Devotion School in 2019 after finding that he owned slaves. The school is now named after Florida Ruffin Ridley, a prominent Black activist and writer who supported women's suffrage and the anti-lynching movement.
Ridley attended Boston public schools and graduated from Boston Teachers' College in 1882. She was the second African American to teach in the Boston public schools (the first was Elizabeth Smith, who taught at the Phillips School in the 1870s).
30. Jan. 2024 · Two Brookline schools now proudly carry the names Florida Ruffin Ridley and Roland Hayes. Before, the names of both schools (Devotion and Heath) were directly linked to enslavers.
