Josh Hager was born to a Catholic mother and Jewish father in 1970 or 1971. He grew up on Long Island, and moved to Boston in the early 1980s. Hager described his sense of subversive humor as heavily inspired by fellow Jewish creators like Woody Allen and Andy Kaufman, and it would later be instrumental in his performance career.
Hager led the Elevator Drops, a controversial Boston band in the 1990s. He also played with The Rentals after joining the band in 1999. Hager is also a music producer. Josh Hager (born June 27, 1970), sometimes known professionally as Garvy J., is a musician. Biography. In the 1990s, Hager was a member of the bands The Elevator Drops and Backstroke to Cuba. In 1999, while living in Boston, Rivers Cuomo recommended Hager to former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp.

Josh Hager joined the band at this time, playing both keyboards and guitar. On April 29, 2016, Devo performed at Will Ferrell and Chad Smith's Red Hot Benefit. On May 22, Robert Mothersbaugh Sr., father of Mark, Bob, and Jim Mothersbaugh, died. Robert portrayed General Boy in various Devo films.
They often call him "Josh 2" because of Josh on drums, he syncs up pretty well with DEVO history. I believe Josh Hagar first fell into the DEVO camp when his brother worked as engineer on the Something For Everybody album. As Mark remarked recently "there's always a thing with brothers in our band".
