    Josh Hager was born to a Catholic mother and Jewish father in 1970 or 1971. He grew up on Long Island, and moved to Boston in the early 1980s. Hager described his sense of subversive humor as heavily inspired by fellow Jewish creators like Woody Allen and Andy Kaufman, and it would later be instrumental in his performance career.

    Hager led the Elevator Drops, a controversial Boston band in the 1990s. He also played with The Rentals after joining the band in 1999. Hager is also a music producer.
