Ab dem Album Hobo with a Grin von 1978 verzichtete er vorübergehend auch auf den Bandnamen, obwohl weiterhin Cockney-Rebel-Musiker zu seinen Mitmusikern gehörten. Auch Marc Bolan wirkte bei einer der Aufnahmen (America the Brave) als Gitarrist mit.
