February 12, 1919. Creating special workers’ faculties within higher education institutions was one way the Bolsheviks sought to carry through a social revolution, and was seen as an important step in preparing the proletariat to take command of their own fate.
The first version of Workers’ Faculties opened in Soviet Russia in 1919, shortly after the October Revolution. Called Rabfak, short for rabočij fakul’tet, these institutions were designed to quickly prepare peasants and workers for higher education.
The rabfak students, who tended to be politically engaged and unified, took an active role in school governance and faculty nominations. The preparatory course they attended was designed around the same progressive ideas that were taught in the foundational studies at Vkhutemas.
