Leben. Varney besuchte nach der High School die Murray State University.Schon während seiner Schulzeit nahm er an Theateraufführungen teil. Ab Mitte der 1970er Jahre spielte er in verschiedenen Fernsehserien, von 1977 bis 1978 spielte er Seaman Broom in der Serie Einsatz Petticoat.
