Ken Curtis (born Curtis Wain Gates; July 2, 1916 – April 28, 1991) was an American actor and singer best known for his role as Festus Haggen on the western television series Gunsmoke. He appeared on Gunsmoke earlier in other roles (such as “Brisco” in S4E32’s “Change of Heart").

Ken Curtis. Actor: Gunsmoke. Considering the kind of scruffy, backwoods, uneducated, Deep-South hillbilly types he played, many people would be surprised to hear that Ken Curtis wasn't actually born in the south but in the small town of Las Animas, Colorado, the son of the town sheriff.
Curtis branched out into film production in the 1950s with two extremely low-budget monster films, The Killer Shrews (1959) and The Giant Gila Monster (1959), but he is best known for his long-running role as Festus Hagen, the scruffy, cantankerous deputy in the long-running TV series Gunsmoke (1955).
8. Nov. 2023 · It follows the life of Marshall Matt Dillon in Dodge City, the series aired its 635 episodes from 1955 through 1975, and won 15 of its 40 award nominations. Ken died from a heart attack in his sleep aged 74 on 28 April 1991; his remains were cremated, and his ashes scattered in Colorado. Image source.
