Inge de Bruijn won her first medal at the World Championships in 1991 at the age of 17. For her first Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992, she was one of the young hopefuls to follow. But these Games ended for her with two eighth-place finishes in the 50m freestyle and the 4x100m medley.
Inge de Bruijn is a former world record holder and Olympic champion in freestyle and butterfly events. She won eight medals, including four golds, at three consecutive Olympics from 2000 to 2004.

Inge de Bruijn is the most successful Dutch athlete in history, winning eight Olympic medals, including four golds, and 11 World Records in freestyle and butterfly. She trained with Hall of Fame coach Paul Bergen and was named World Female Swimmer of the Year in 2000 and 2001.
