Joseph Lawende (9 February 1847 – 9 January 1925) was a Polish-born British cigarette salesman who is believed to have witnessed serial killer Jack the Ripper in the company of his fourth victim, Catherine Eddowes, approximately nine minutes before the discovery of her body on 30 September 1888.
He lived a long and fruitful life after his brush with destiny and if he truly was the man who saw Jack the Ripper with a victim scant seconds before a murder, he never sought to make more of that moment than it was. Joseph Lawende died in January 1925 aged 78.

11. Juni 2024 · The witness, Joseph Lawende, was able to describe the man, but also said he would not be able to identify him if he saw him again. Since her body was found less than fifteen minutes later in Mitre Square, there is a good chance Lawende saw the face of her murderer.
