La cumparsita" (little street procession, a grammatical diminutive of la comparsa) is a tango written in 1916 by the Uruguayan musician Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, with lyrics by Argentines Pascual Contursi and Enrique Pedro Maroni . It is among the most famous and recognizable tangos of all time.
“La cumparsita” arrived at the movies as well. In 1947 a film directed by Antonio Monplet was premiered, under the title of the popular tango, starring Hugo del Carril. Furthermore, it was the title given in Spain to the Enrique Carreras´s film Canción de arrabal of 1961.
A young woman named Gloria, daughter of a Spanish immigrant, obtains great popularity in her neighborhood of Buenos Aires because of the way she interprets the tango.
