Peter G. Gerry is a private equity and venture capital investor and a co-owner of Sycamore Management Corporation. He is also a trustee of several not-for-profit organizations and a harness racing enthusiast.
In a major upset, he defeated incumbent Republican Senator Henry F. Lippett, thus becoming the first Democratic senator from Rhode Island since 1859. Gerry was also the first U.S. Senator from Rhode Island elected by popular vote rather than by the state senate.
