Andrus managed huge swaths of public land as a cabinet member in President Jimmy Carter’s administration and was the longest-serving governor in Idaho history, but the former lumberjack was known as an approachable everyman who listed his number in the local phone directory.
Cecil Andrus rode the debate over Central Idaho mining to the governor’s office in 1970. But Andrus’ unprecedented 14 years as governor also brought milestones in education, including a state kindergarten law passed on his watch.
