William Knowland of California was introduced to politics at a young age by his father, congressman and newspaper publisher Joseph Knowland. Elected to the California state assembly in 1932, Knowland quickly rose through party ranks to gain a leadership position in the Republican National Committee.
IT WAS with a deep sense of personal loss that I learned of the tragic death of former Senator William F. Knowland. Bill Knowland was a man of boundless energy and integrity, and I consider it an honor to have served with him in the United States Senate.
