Hiram Bingham (II) was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1831. He was a graduate of Yale University and Andover Theological Seminary. He was a pioneer Congregational Church missionary to the Gilbert Islands where he helped create a written form of the language and translated the Bible into Gilbertese.
