Alfonso VI. war das sechste Kind des portugiesischen Königs Johann IV. (1604-1656) und dessen Gattin Luisa von Guzmán (1613-1666). Er erblickte das Licht der Welt am 21. August 1643 und starb am 12. September 1683. Als er drei Jahre alt war, wurde er sehr krank.
Luisa von Guzmán, seit 1656 Regentin für ihren kranken Sohn Alfons, hatte konsequent alle Heiratsangebote für Katharina abgelehnt und hoffte weiterhin auf eine eheliche und politische Allianz mit England. Als Cromwell am 3. September 1658 starb, keimte erste Hoffnung auf – in Portugal wie auch bei der im Exil lebenden englischen Königsfamilie.
