Ludwig Gaston war der jüngste von vier Söhnen des Prinzen Ludwig August von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha (1845–1907), aus dessen Ehe mit der Infantin Leopoldina von Brasilien, Tochter des Kaisers Peter II. von Brasilien.
