St. Joseph's University, New York (SJNY, SJU or St. Joe's) is a private Catholic university in New York State, with campuses in Brooklyn and Long Island. The university provides education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, offering degrees in more than 54 majors and other programs.
In 1889, Saint Joseph’s College was chartered and by 1891, the first school year began with two distinct academic tracks: a Classical program for priesthood and a Commercial program for grade school teachers. Although known as a college, the students were at a high school level or lower.
St. Joe's, founded by the Jesuits in 1851 as Saint Joseph's College, is the seventh oldest Jesuit university in the United States and is named after the legal father of Jesus, Saint Joseph.
