Anita Malfatti is considered a ground-breaking artist of modernism in Brazil. During her early artistic training in Berlin and New York, Anita Malfatti produced Expressionist portraits in which she captured the psychological characteristics of her models.
Anita Malfatti was the first Brazilian artist to introduce European and American forms of Modernism to Brazil. She had a controversial solo exhibition in 1917-1918 and participated in the Week of Modern Art in 1922.
