Hugo was re-elected to the National assembly, only to resign a short time later. in 1872 he returned to Guernsey for a year, where he wrote a volume of poetry titled L’Année terrible. He was elected and re-elected to the senate in the years 1876 and 1882. Juliette drouet died in 1883. Hugo died on 22 May 1885.
