Robert Joseph Farnon CM (24 July 1917 – 23 April 2005) was a Canadian-born composer, conductor, musical arranger and trumpet player. As well as being a composer of original works (often in the light music genre), he was commissioned by film and television producers for theme and incidental music.
Einem breiten Publikum bekannt wurde Hardy ab 1978, in der Rolle des Tierarztes Siegfried Farnon in der BBC -Serie All Creatures Great and Small (deutsch Der Doktor und das liebe Vieh, ab 1979 von der ARD ausgestrahlt).
Im Sommer 1937 reist der junge, frisch approbierte Tierarzt James Herriot in das (fiktive) Städtchen Darrowby in den Yorkshire Dales zu dem ihm noch unbekannten Tierarzt Siegfried Farnon, der dort eine Landpraxis betreibt und James eine Anstellung als Assistent angeboten hat.

Farnon began by learning violin; he studied piano with his mother at seven and with Jack Gray at nine. In 1930 he began playing drums in the dance band of his brother Brian; he also studied percussion with Duncan Snider.
