Geno Washington was a US airman stationed in East Anglia who became well known for his impromptu performances in London nightclubs. In 1965, guitarist Pete Gage needed a singer to front his new band and replace the previous singer Errol Dixon, and asked Washington to join.

Geno Washington was the Number One crowd-puller in the British clubs in the 1965-67 period. Only the Graham Bond Organisation were comparable, but Geno was performing more mainstream material - cover versions of contemporary hits by major American soul artists - than Graham's more R&B influenced set.
