Mel Tormé (1925–99) Nicknamed ‘The Velvet Fog’ for his smooth mellow vocal style, Melvin (Mel) Tormé was a consummate all-round entertainer – singer, songwriter, composer, arranger, pianist, drummer and writer. The son of Russian immigrants, Tormé was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up on the city’s south side.
