Like Jill Esmond, Vivien remained in love with Olivier for the rest of her life. “She loved him to the end, no question,” says Tarquin. “She had his photograph by her bed all the time she was with her final partner, Jack Marivale. The love of her life was Larry.

  2. In the biography Vivien Leigh by Hugo Vickers, the author mentions an account David Niven wrote about Vivien’s complete nervous breakdown in Hollywood, 1953. Niven disguises Vivien’s name as “Missie” so as not to reveal her identity (most likely out of respect for their friendship while Vivien was alive). Here is his account of that ...

    4. Apr. 2011 · Vivien Leigh appeared on the programme on September 9, 1952. Unfortunately the audio isn’t available at this time, but it is really interesting to see which songs she chose. Tucked away in a little valley amidst woodlands and green pastures, the Mill is so peaceful and extremely beautiful in the spring. A courtyard with a lovely landscaped pond, and a wall covered in wisteria sits on one side of the house. It’s called Vivien’s White Garden.

  8. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. - Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. I first saw her in The Mask of Virtue –her first West End success, and shared the general enthusiasm for her staggering beauty, engaging personality, unique quality of voice, remarkable talent and for her undeniable possession of what Noel Coward called ‘star ...

  9. To know Vivien was to love her—to have loved Vivien was also to have been loved by her, and loved with a true devotion and a passionate loyalty that might well put your own wavering emotion to shame. But this is to eulogize, and fashion must prevail. I must begin with Vivien’s faults. If I can think of any. At the moment I can only think of ...

  10. 2. Apr. 2011 · Vivien Leigh almost alone is the exception: the Great Beauty that hasn’t been virtually chased off the stage and onto the screen because of it. From her stage debut in 1935 in “TheMask of Virtue”–which the New York Times commemorated as: “Gains Fame Overnight. Within a few hours after her successful debut, Vivien Leigh received offers from five film companies” etc. etc.–her face ...
