30. Sept. 2021 · As an early exponent of the 1980s’ new synthesizer tech, Geoff Downes first came to prominence alongside future super-producer Trevor Horn as part of new-wave duo The Buggles. But his early influences, remarkable keyboard skills and classical training soon conspired to make him the ‘go-to’ keyboard maestro for some of rock’s hardest hitting, longest running, and most respected bands.
Geoff would continue to work with Horn when Trevor was invited to produce what would become a new Yes album. Drawing on the leftover DRAMA-era Yes track, Geoff Downes was asked to record with the band for the new album, a gig which resulted in being asked to re-join Yes after 30 years. 21. Apr. 2019 · Everybody needs to start somewhere. For Geoff Downes, that break came in the orchestra pit at London’s New Theatre. It was 1975, and the 23-year-old Downes was playing keyboards in a brand new stage show. And his unlikely paymasters? Pointy-nosed kids’ TV characters The Wombles.
A native of England, Geoff Downes went to Leeds School of Music. Upon moving to London, he met Trevor Horn. Working together on commercial jingles, they formed the group the Buggles.
