30. Okt. 2023 · The umbilical vein arises from multiple small veins within the placenta which carry oxygen and nutrient rich blood derived from the maternal blood circulation via the chorionic villi. From here, it enters the umbilical cord, along with the paired umbilical arteries.
After the exchange of oxygen and nutrients, the umbilical vein carries fresh oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood circulating back to the fetal systemic circulation. At term, maternal blood flow to the placenta is approximately 600–700 ml/minute.
