The American Freedom Train (AFT) was a 26-car train led by one of three enormous steam engines restored just for the occasion. Over a 21 month period from April 1, 1975 to December 31, 1976 more than 7 million Americans visited the train during its tour of all 48 contiguous states.

This van joined the train in Colorado Springs October 2, 1975. It was manned by a Field Services Unit of the Disabled American Veterans in cooperation with the American Freedom Train Foundation, providing services to veterans and their families as their "American Freedom Train Unit".
Moved on December 14th, 1974 to a Burlington Northern roundhouse for restoration. Restoration takes longer than expected but is completed on April 21, 1975. On August 4, 1975, in Chicago, SP 4449 takes over American Freedom Train duties from 2101 and pulls the train westward.
