Nancy Hanks Lincoln (February 5, 1784 – October 5, 1818) was the mother of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Her marriage to Thomas Lincoln also produced a daughter, Sarah, and a son, Thomas Jr. When Nancy and Thomas had been married for just over 10 years, the family moved from Kentucky to western Perry County, Indiana, in 1816.
On June 12, 1806, Thomas Lincoln married Nancy Hanks at Beechland in Washington County, Kentucky. Her youngest son, Thomas, was then but ten years of age. Closely associated with the widow's husband in his Ken tucky land ventures was Hananiah Lincoln, a cousin of the pioneer Abraham. It was his presence in the Beechland com munity, apparently, which caused the widow, so far removed.
It was while at the Berry's that she came to know Thomas Lincoln who was employed by the Berry's as a carpenter. Over the years, their friendship grew into something more and on June 12, 1806, the two were married.
Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks were married in 1806 in Hardin County, Kentucky. Their second child, Abraham (named after his paternal grandfather who had been “killed by Indians”), was born in 1809 on a three hundred-acre farm Thomas had purchased on Nolin Creek a year earlier.
Her family later moved to Kentucky where, on June 12, 1806, she married Thomas Lincoln. She gave birth to three children: Sarah (February 10, 1807), Abraham (February 12, 1809), and Thomas (1812), who died in infancy. In 1816, the Lincoln family migrated to what is today Spencer County, Indiana.
