Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, and with little early history to speak of, Oldham rose to prominence in the 19th century as an international centre of textile manufacture.
It is named for the Oldham family, who lived in Werneth Hall during the Middle Ages. Oldham was the centre for an agricultural district with a woolen industry until the 19th century, when it became a major cotton-spinning and weaving town.

Oldham is one of England's great modern centres of manufacture. In 1760 it contained only about 60 dwellings, mostly thatched huts. Its rapid progress is due chiefly to its proximity to the Lancashire coal fields. These coal fields give employment to a considerable section of the population.
Cheetham toured Lancashire between 1908 and 1916 gathering material for the 1920 Little Guide to the country. Oldham, he proclaimed, 'the chief of the Lancashire cotton spinning towns, is singularly unattractive and without interest to the archaeologist'.
