3. Sept. 2022 · Last month, the Morgan Library & Museum opened “ PLEASE SEND TO REAL LIFE, ” an exhibition unearthing 200 never-before-seen photos by Johnson, the founder of the international mail art network know as the New York Correspondence School, who died in 1995.
A photograph in this exhibition by Hazel Larsen Archer titled “Ray Johnson at Black Mountain College” (1948) shows the back of Johnson’s head, rather than his face — a typical expression of how Black Mountain artists tried to look differently at everything from painting to portraiture.
