Kottke released an album annually from 1989 to 1991: My Father's Face, followed by That's What and then Great Big Boy, which featured guest appearances by Lyle Lovett and Margo Timmins. Two years later, he returned with Peculiaroso, produced by Rickie Lee Jones. The solo album One Guitar, No Vocals was released in 1999.

De achtergrondvocalen van Lyle Lovett en Margo Timmins zijn niet erg opvallend, maar daar staat het mooie spel van Alex Acuña (drums en percussie) tegenover, en natuurlijk het heerlijke orgeltje van Robert Martin. En uiteraard het fraaie gitaarspel van Kottke zelf.
