The Soul Stirrers were an American gospel music group, whose career spans over eighty years. The group was a pioneer in the development of the quartet style of gospel, and a major influence on Soul, Doo wop, and the Motown sound, some of the secular music that owed much to gospel.
January 22, 1931, Clarksdale, Mississippi, U.S.—d. December 11, 1964, Los Angeles, California), and Johnnie Taylor (b. May 5, 1938, Crawfordsville, Arkansas—d. May 31, 2000, Dallas, Texas). The Soul Stirrers began singing together in Trinity, Texas, about 1932, recorded for the U.S. Library of Congress in 1936, and added Harris the next year.
