He was born in Kumasi, Gold Coast (present-day Ghana ), on 26 November 1918, to Nana James W. K. Appiah and Nana Adwoa Akyaa, members of the Ashanti imperial aristocracy.
Joseph Appiah was one of the major and most versatile figures of Ghanaian politics, both before and after independence, his activism having spanned three decades. This personal account of his life and experience is therefore a most welcome addition to the historical record.
