In 1975, Gloria and her cousin Mercedes "Merci" Navarro (1957–2007) met Emilio Estefan Jr. while performing at a church ensemble rehearsal. Estefan, who had formed the band The Miami Latin Boys earlier that year, learned about Gloria through a mutual acquaintance.
Mercedes Navarro Murciano's youth was filled with music and memories to last a lifetime. Along with then-husband Raul Murciano and cousin Gloria Fajarda -- later known to the world as Gloria Estefan -- she was a vocalist, songwriter and founding member of the Miami Sound Machine, appearing on their first several albums.
