Otis reduced the size of his band and hired the singers Mel Walker, Little Esther (born Esther Mae Jones and later known as Esther Phillips) and the Robins (who later became the Coasters). He discovered the teenaged Esther Jones when she won a talent show at the Barrelhouse Club.
Biografie. 1949 nahm sie an einem Talentwettbewerb im „Barrelhouse Club“ von Johnny Otis in Los Angeles teil. Otis war so beeindruckt, dass er sie für seine Revue The California Rhythm and Blues Caravan engagierte, wo sie als Little Esther auftrat. 1950 hatte sie mit dem Gesangsquartett „The Robins“ ihren ersten Hit, Double Crossin’ Blues.
Mit seiner Caravan-Band zog er durch die USA; neben ihm traten dabei neben Little Esther (Phillips) unter anderem auch Little Miss Cornshucks, Mel Walker, Red Lythe, Pete Lewis, Devonia „Lady Dee“ Williams, Sallie Blair und The Robins auf. In den 1950er Jahren hatte Otis einige Erfolge.

Das vom NDR aufgezeichnete Konzert im „Onkel Pö“, mit kraftvollen Begleitern in der Band und sehr enthusiastischem Publikum, dokumentiert auf gleich zwei CD’s, beweist sehr nachdrücklich, dass sie die Geister noch immer beschwören konnte.
