Peterborough is known as the gateway to the Kawarthas, "cottage country", a large recreational region of the province. It is named in honour of Peter Robinson, an early Canadian politician who oversaw the first major immigration to the area. The city is the seat of Peterborough County.

16. Mai 2024 · Peterborough, city, seat of Peterborough county, southeastern Ontario, Canada. It lies on the Otonabee River, 70 miles (115 km) east-northeast of Toronto. In 1821 a sawmill and gristmill were founded at the site. The town was named for Peter Robinson, who led almost 2,000 Irish immigrants there in 1825.
Peterborough, Ont, incorporated as a city in 1905, population 78 698 (2011c), 75 406 (2006c). The City of Peterborough is situated on the Otonabee River, about 40 km north of Lake Ontario and 110 km northeast of Toronto.
