Hong Kong is a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China. With 7.4 million residents of various nationalities in a 1,104-square-kilometre (426 sq mi) territory, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated territories in the world.
Hong Kong was a British colony from 1842 to 1997 as China surrendered the city after losing the Second Opium War. After the handover in 1997, Hong Kong became under Chinese control under special status. Hong Kong has its own constitution that is different from that of the People's Republic of China (PRC).
As a military outpost and trading port, Hong Kong's territory gained the attention of the world. Before the British government colonised the New Territories and New Kowloon in 1898, Punti, Hakka, Tanka and Hoklo people had migrated to and stayed in Hong Kong for many years.
Hongkong liegt am Delta des Perlflusses. Hongkongs 1.090 km² Fläche verteilen sich auf vier Gebiete: Hongkong Island (79 km²), Kowloon (12 km²), New Territories (740 km²) und die Outer Islands (248 km²). Bestimmt wird die Stadt durch die Berge, an deren Fuße sie sich erstreckt.
