The Contours is one of the early American soul singing groups signed to Motown Records. The group is best known for its classic chart-topping 1962 hit, " Do You Love Me ", which sold over 1 million copies and became a major hit again in 1988.
Hubert Johnson (January 14, 1941 – July 11, 1981) was an American singer and performer. Johnson is best known for being one of the original members of the Motown R&B vocal group The Contours . Johnson was also the cousin of the late Jackie Wilson .
3. Aug. 2020 · About 1971, original member Joe Billingslea revived the group, playing a few dates here and there. By 1981, the group consisted of Joe Billingslea, former Contour Council Gay, Arthur Hinson, Martin ‘Beanie’ Upshire and C. Autry ‘Breeze’ Hatcher. The Contours began to play a lot more dates.
The Contours, who included originally members Billingslea and Potts (Johnson had committed suicide in 1981), joined the subsequent Dirty Dancing tour.

They had brilliant choreography of splits and fouetté turns that Motown founder Berry Gordy first thought was too much for a stage act but Jackie Wilson persuaded him to give them a chance.
