Jerome John „Jerry“ Garcia (* 1. August 1942 in San Francisco, Kalifornien; † 9. August 1995 in Lagunitas-Forest Knolls, Kalifornien) war ein US-amerikanischer Musiker, der vor allem als Bandleader der Rockgruppe Grateful Dead bekannt wurde.
Grateful Dead was an American rock band formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. The Grateful Dead is known for its eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, blues, jazz, folk, country, bluegrass, rock and roll, gospel, reggae, and world music with psychedelia.
Joining in autumn 1967 was full-time collaborator Robert Hunter (lyrics), an old friend of Garcia’s. Shortly thereafter, the band added Mickey Hart (drums, percussion), who helped the Dead realize their psychedelic musical vision with new rhythmic intensity and commitment to practice.
