28. März 2024 · Thad Jones, born Thaddeus Joseph Jones, one hundred and one years ago today on March 28, 1923, in Pontiac, Michigan, was a renowned jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader whose innovative arrangements and distinctive trumpet style left an indelible mark on the world of jazz.
Biography. Thaddeus Joseph Jones was born on March 28, 1923 in Pontiac, Michigan. Jones’s father, originally from Vicksburg, Mississippi, was a lumber inspector for General Motors and a deacon in the Baptist church. His mother was a housewife, who encouraged her five children’s interest in music.
Trumpeter Thad Jones reinvigorated the big-band genre through his harmonically rich arrangements and compositions for pianist and bandleader William “Count” Basie’s mid-fifties orchestra, and the groundbreaking ensemble he co-led with for a dozen years with drummer Mel Lewis.
Biography. A harmonically advanced trumpeter/cornetist with a distinctive sound, as well as a talented arranger/composer, Thad Jones (the younger brother of Hank and older brother of Elvin) had a very productive career.
