With its 1,000m 2 of floor space, the Hall of Festivals ( Festsaal) is the biggest hall in the whole of the Hofburg. Although built as a throne room, it was never used as such. The internal works were finished in 1923, but the artwork remained incomplete.

Originally a medieval fortified castle dating from the 13th century, the Hofburg was extended by each emperor. The sprawling, asymmetric complex which extends over 240,000 m² consists of 18 wings, 19 courtyards and 2,600 rooms in which nearly 5,000 people still work and live today.

4. März 2024 · The Neue Burg forms an extended wing from the main Hofburg palace area and lines one side of Heldenplatz square (see the photo above) in the centre of Vienna. Despite the grand look, this building is a relative baby in Vienna’s historical architectural landscape.
The Hofburg was the residence of the Habsburgs for over 600 years and thus the centre of the Holy Roman Empire. Apart from its function as the seat of government and administrative centre, the Hofburg was also the winter residence of the imperial family. The Hofburg Congress Center is imbued with elegance and is located in part of the Old Imperial Palace (13th century), the New Imperial Palace (around 1900) and the Leopold Wing (17th century).
